Everything you might want to know first

01How a round works

Ten questions, drawn at random from all fifty-four capitals of Africa. Each one names a country and offers four capitals; exactly one is right.

There is no timer counting down at you, but the clock is running — your finishing time is recorded alongside your score, and it settles ties on the leaderboard. Answer quickly, but answer carefully.

You can change nothing once you have chosen. The round moves on, and at the end you get the full list of what you got right and what you missed.

02Your best score is the one that counts

Every round you play is scored out of ten. Your account keeps your best result — play as often as you like, and only your strongest round is shown against your name.

That means a bad round costs you nothing. Learn the map, come back, beat yourself.

03The leaderboard

The top ten players are listed on the leaderboard, ranked by best score and then by the fastest time to reach it.

Your own row is highlighted wherever you sit, so you can see exactly how far you are from the top ten.

04What is in the bank

All fifty-four recognised African states, from Algeria and Egypt in the north to South Africa and Eswatini in the south, and the island nations too — Cabo Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles.

Some are easy: Cairo, Nairobi, Accra. Some are the ones that catch people out: Yamoussoukro rather than Abidjan, Dodoma rather than Dar es Salaam, Gitega rather than Bujumbura, Pretoria rather than Johannesburg.

05Why this quiz exists

Because the map of Africa is taught badly in most places. Fifty-four countries, fifty-four capitals, and a continent that gets flattened into a handful of names.

This is a small, repeatable way to fix that — ten questions at a time, until the whole map is in your head.
